How the Program Works

The Fur Free Retail Program represents an international effort to provide consumers with accurate information about a retailer's fur policy, allowing consumers to make an informed choice when shopping. Essentially, companies are asked to take a public stand against fur.

The program hopes to end the sale of fur products throughout retail establishments by developing positive relationships with, and offering support to, those retailers who have committed to a no-fur policy.

The program has been developed by Born Free USA united with Animal Protection Institute, a national non-profit animal protection organization with its head office in California. The program is supported by an international coalition of more than 35 leading animal protection and environmental organizations worldwide, representing more than 10 million members and supporters in the United States alone.

Retailers can join the program in two easy steps. We simply ask retailers to commit to not selling any fur or fur trim items by:

  1. Signing the Retailer Commitment Against Fur, and

  2. Developing an internal system to ensure vendors do not supply the company with items that contain real fur, including credible assurances that faux fur (including trim and accessories) is indeed not real animal fur.

That's it.

Once a Retailer has taken these two simple steps, groups around the world can join us in supporting and promoting the company as a compassionate place for the growing number of socially-responsible consumers to shop.
